is one of Lithuania’s most prominent writers. Famed during the Soviet period for his novels and screenplays, Šaltenis became a key figure in the independence movement. He was one of the signatories of Lithuania’s declaration of independence and served as Culture Minister after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
